So this rumored Mastodon/Opeth/Ghost tour has been all over the internet for two or so weeks now, and finally, finally we have dates to confirm everyone’s sources. The “Heritage Hunter” tour will begin in April, So yet again, another ridiculously awesome tour this Spring. Mastodon and Opeth will be trading the headlining/closing slot throughout the tour. From the fan’s standpoint, there is one good thing about the shitty state of the music industry; bands basically HAVE to tour. While there are always a plethora of winter and spring tours in the U.S. this year seems particularly busy. Check out some dates and hit up some shows, buy a CD, a shirt, anything, and support these guys!
One of the bigger tours, the Metal Alliance Tour, will feature Devildriver, The Faceless, Dying Fetus, Job For a Cowboy, 3 Inches of Blood, Impending Doom, Wretched. If you haven’t seen Devildriver then I’m not sure what you’ve done wrong because they never stop touring and seem to be on like every other metal tour that gets announced. The Faceless and J.F.A.C. always put on a great show, but I have yet to see Impending Doom or Wretched live yet. Last time I saw Dying Fetus they absolutely SLAYED, and the last two times I’ve seen 3 Inches of Blood they made me think my ears were bleeding. Needless to say…it was awesome. Check out dates HERE.
Iced Earth have announced co-headlining dates with Symphony X and Warbringer, get dates and info HERE. I haven’t had a chance to see any of these bands live, but I’m sure it’s awesome. In writing this, it reminded me of Iced Earth’s terribly awesome music video, so why not?! Here ya go!
East of the Wall and Black Tusk have announced a mini-tour featuring Intronaut, Hull, and Royal Thunder on various dates. Fresh of their ridiculously awesome album The Apologist, East of the Wall would be awesome to see, throw Intronaut in a couple of shows and damn! That’s a lineup! Too bad these are the only dates!

Boing Boing Video have premiered the music video for Mastodon’s “Dry Bone Valley” which can be viewed below. The video was produced and animated by Tim Biskup. This was the track the band opened with on their recent headlining trek in support of The Hunter, and is probably enjoyed best with your favorite recreational drug.
The rumors of a Mastodon, Opeth, and Ghost tour appear to be true as Mastodon’s Troy Sanders confirmed it on a radio interview last week. No dates have been announced but HOLY HELL! What a line-up! We will definitely let you know when those dates are announced!
Yes, I do listen to a lot of non-metal stuff. I tend to go for things the exact opposite from what I am fond of with metal. A lot of mellower albums came out this year, including a few from metal artists themselves. So when you’re not burning churches down, carving “Slayer” into your arms, or perfecting your corpse paint, check these out if you’re not too brootal dude! In no particular order:
Matt Bauer – The Jessamine County Book of the Living
I first heard of Matt Bauer on Pandora a few years ago. I saw his rockin’ beard and figured I’d give him a shot. Before long I was delving into a variety of folk music, but usually ended up coming back to Bauer. Many of the songs on this album sound simple initially, but the use of a plethora of additional instruments build intricate, moody songs; that along with Bauer’s voice, often emit a darker tone…or maybe that’s just the metal guy in me.
The Devin Townsend Project – Ghost
I knew Ghost was going to be the mellowest of Devin Townsend’s albums in this series, but I was blown away with how mellow it was. While being surprised, I was thrilled with it, because like I said before, this is my main go-to music when I need a break from people screaming and completely shredding their instruments at light speed. After listening to Deconstruction, this album was almost mandatory to decompress.
Opeth – Heritage
It’s not a metal album…..I don’t care what you say, it’s not. But it’s still damn good.
Thomas Giles – Pulse
I’ll admit I never would have heard of this album if it wasn’t for the fact that Between the Buried and Me frontman Tommy Rogers recorded….everything on here. You definitely hear the BTBAM influences on the album, but there is far more experimentation electronics-wise and an overall atmospheric element created throughout. The fact Rogers played every instrument on the album is impressive enough in its own right, but the fact he created some killer songs along the way makes him even cooler than he already was.
Evan Brewer – Alone
I play bass. I like The Faceless. This was a no-brainer. Dan and I get pumped when we can actually hear the bass on an album or live. We gave each other an agreeable nod when Scale the Summit hit the stage last week and the bass was completely audible. Who needs drums, guitars, or vocals when you can play bass like this!? Brewer meshes a variety of styles and creates a one-of-a-kind sound, that’s a true testament to this often overlooked instrument.
